“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.”
– Ralph Waldo Emerson
When life gets busy and we fall into old habits, we sometimes forget to communicate. Talking is one thing but communicating is another, just as listening and hearing are quite different. Did you know that coffee is not just a beverage to help you wake up? It’s also a peace maker and joy maker.
Last week, I met a friend in her neighborhood. She took me to a café tucked inside an old cemetery. Such a bizarre corner for a café that also sold potted flowers. It really was simple but also extraordinary and special. Under beautiful weather, we were able to enjoy uninterrupted time sharing stories over coffee and kuchen. She’s so funny! She even told me how another friend always make a point of “feeding her camera first”. With that understanding, I was able to take a picture of our afternoon desserts – vanilla cake topped with blueberries and filled with a blueberry mousse, and quark cake (cheesecake) with mandarin oranges and a meringue topping. Both very light and delicious! My friend, who has spent a decade living in France, describes the local pâtisseries and boulangeries in cities like Lyon and Paris with vivid passion. I am inspired to take a visit. Coffee, not just your morning brew. Gather around the table and share in the richness of community and friendship. You just never know what you’ll learn when you take a little time to slow down.
